Abstract

The invention described in the parent Specification according to which pattern effects are produced on fabrics of vegetable fibres by subjecting to local parchmentizing followed by overlapping local shrinking is modified by subjecting the fabric to a preliminary local treatment with a paste comprising cellulose or a derivative thereof together with a pigment, e.g. as described p in Specification 432,389. In an example, a bleached, mercerized cotton muslin is printed in separate designs with a gum arabic resist and a paste containing acetylcellulose, acetone, ethyl alcohol, amyl acetate and titanium white; after drying, the material is parchmentized with sulphuric acid, washed and dried on a stretching frame; a pattern stretching over the parchmentized and non-parchmentized parts is printed with the gum reserve, the material treated with caustic soda solution, washed and dried.
