[Class 65 (i)] [Also in Group XVII] A spring device for forcing open the hinged lid 3 of a chest, &c. when the fastening is released comprises a spiral spring 23 whose inner end is secured to a slotted stud 24 in the body of the chest and whose outer end is formed with an extension 21 which presses on and slides in a metal track 22 on the lid. The stud 24 is secured in a housing 25 by means of a bolt and washer and it is provided with a lever 29 movable by means of a screw 28 to adjust the tension of the spring. Resilient sealing strips in the lid contact with the top edges of the body in the closed position. A friction governor to limit the speed at which the lid is raised may be provided, and a roller may be provided on the end of extension 21. Specifications 489,564 and 490,084 are referred to.
