Abstract

Thread, produced by extruding a solution containing cellulose or a derivative thereof into a coagulating bath, is gradually stretched by passing it several times round a pair of rotating conical rollers arranged with their axes inclined with respect to one another and during only the latter part of the stretching operation is treated with water or an aqueous solution. This treatment liquid may be at elevated temperature and may contain small quantities of an acid, such as sulphuric acid, or of a salt, such as sodium sulphate. In an example, viscose thread is gradually stretched in the above-stated manner, and during the latter part of the stretching operation is treated with water at 45 DEG C.
