Abstract

489,930. Oil engines. MAKINS, T. C., and RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. Dec. 2, 1936, No. 33008. [Class 7 (iii)] . In a fuel injector having a spring loaded fuel injection needle valve movable solely in an axial direction and opened by the fuel pressure, the valve seats in a member provided at its inner end with a nozzle and mounted with lateral clearance in the injector body ; as the loading spring is inserted into position and its pressure is exerted on the valve, the latter adjusts the seating member to itself and then the seating member is firmly secured by axial pressure applied to it apart from the valve. A shoulder 5 near the inner end of an injector casing 1 supports a sleeve 2 having lateral clearance between itself and the casing and the sleeve forms a seat for a fuel needle valve 12 the coned end of which centres the sleeve to ensure accurate seating of the valve. A cartridge 8, fitted without clearance in the casing 1, bears hard on the flange 4 of the sleeve 2 when the head 16 of a stop pin 17 is pressed upon the upper end of the cartridge by a plug 18 screwed in the casing 1. The valve spring 22 surrounds the stop pin 17 and bears against the head 16 thereof and a disc 20 resting upon the piston 11 of the needle valve 12, the thickness of the disc determining the extent to which the valve opens. Fuel is supplied through an edge filter 32 to channels 24, between the casing 1 and the cartridge 8, cut in the walls of either the cartridge, the casing or both, and communicating through channels 25, in the base of the cartridge, with the interior of the sleeve 2. Fuel leaking past the piston 11 of the valve 12 escapes through passages such as 28, 30, 31 in the head 16 of the stop pin and the plug 18. Specifications 20582/09 and 9382/15, [both in Class 7 (iii)], are referred to.
