Abstract

Slag is obtained in a porous or cellular condition by blowing gases through the slag whilst maintaining it at a temperature just above the melting point until it is saturated and subsequently agitating or otherwise treating it to release the absorbed gases. The frothing operation is facilitated by carrying out the blowing operation at a higher pressure than that which prevails during the subsequent frothing operation, which is preferably carried out under reduced pressure, and by heating the slag saturated with gases before the frothing operation to the degrees which it can bear without releasing dissolved gases, for example by the addition to it of slag direct from the furnace. Gases which may be used for the blowing operation are hot air, blast furnace gases, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide. Specifications 344,309 and 361,139 are referred to. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the slag may be saturated with gases by exposing it in thin layers to the gases. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
