Abstract
A cell-like surface, which will retain lubricant when subjected to friction at high temperature or pressure, is formed on cast iron articles, e.g. piston rings, by using a cast iron containing more than 0,15 per cent of phosphorus and subjecting the articles to chemical treatment to remove to some extent the material within the polygonal network formed by the phosphorus-rich constituent, leaving the latter in relief. The article is preferably first degreased and then coated with copper, by chemical deposition or electrolysis, in a neutral or acid copper salt solution, or first in a neutral and then in an acid bath. It is then rinsed, e.g. in water or alcohol, and placed in an acid which will dissolve copper, preferably concentrated nitric acid; adhering acid is neutralized, preferably with sodium carbonate solution, and the article is washed. This treatment produces the cell-like or honeycombed surface.
