488,339. Making compound sheets and collapsable tubes. STEVENS, A. H. (National Lead Co.) Oct. 12, 1937, No. 27696. [Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii), and 83 (iv)] Casting composite ingots ; squirting.-Tincoated lead collapsable tubes are made by fusing together a body of lead and a coating of tin, reducing the composite billet so formed to ribbon form by heavy pressure thereon, such as by rolling or extrusion, punching discs from the ribbon, and extruding them to form coated collapsable tubes. Lead, which may contain 1 per cent of antimony, is cast into a mould 1, Fig. 1, in which crescent-shaped fillers 2 have been placed. The fillers are removed while the lead is still at a temperature of 500 to 600‹ F., a projection 1a holding the lead steady, and tin is cast into the spaces to form a coating 3. The coating may be formed on one side only. The composite billet is rolled, or extruded through a narrow die aperture 6, Fig. 4, to form a ribbon from which circular, plane discs or dished and perforated discs 7, Fig. 8, are punched. The coating is drawn over the edges of the lead in the punching operation. The discs are extruded to form collapsable tubes in extrusion apparatus 9, 10. The ribbon may alternatively be produced by casting a coating of tin on a hollow lead cylinder, extruding therefrom a lead pipe 11 coated with tin 12, and pressing or rolling the tube flat to produce a ribbon 11, 12, Fig. 10.
