Abstract
1331101 Extruding; making tubes DOW CHEMICAL CO 1 Dec 1970 57050/70 Headings B3A and B3P A metal tube is made by extruding a billet through a multi-apertured die with bridges 23 between the apertures 22 whose trailing edges are arranged so that when the metal rejoins as it emerges from the die the joints, Fig. 4, are angled to the normal lines through the tube wall. The die comprises a die plate 11 with a central opening 12 surrounded by a bevelled edge 13 and a feederhole plate 10 with an integral mandrel 19 which extends through the opening 12 when the plates are assembled together to define an extrusion space. The feederhole plate 10 has the apertures 22 separated by the bridges 23 which extend at 10 to 70 degrees to the normal across the extrusion space in one embodiment. An alternative feederhole plate (25), Fig. 6 (not shown), has circular apertures (28) and the bridges (29) have ridged edges (30) on the downstream side which also extend at 10 to 70 degrees to the normal. The billet is preferably aluminium or magnesium alloy and is heated to 860‹ F. before extrusion and extruded at 10 feet per minute. The product is air cooled, stretched and heated to 195‹ F. for 8 hours and 300‹ F. for 8 hours to age harden it.
