Abstract

488,181. Steering ships. DIDRIKSEN, N. J. March 29, 1938, No. 9574. [Class 114] Apparatus for steering and reversing a ship comprises a vertically movable member behind the propeller having side openings directed obliquely forward and fitted with a deflector member movable horizontally to regulate distribution of propeller stream to the side openings. A hollow block A is movable on vertical guides j, g, and is braced at the top by struts h, h<1>. It is raised by a cable n and lowered by gravity. On a bulkhead a is slidably mounted a deflector K, an arm c thereon passing through an opening which has a cover plate f. The arm is formed as a nut to move on a screw d which is rotated by gears e, universal joint i and telescopic rods k, k<1> from a handwheel m. The upper rod k is supported in a universal joint l carried by a bulkhead L. When lowered, the deflector K in the block A directs the stream to side openings the inner edges p, p<1> of which are wedge shaped whilst the central opening has an inturned flange b.
