Abstract

488,102. Toothed gearing. HARRISSEYBOLD-POTTER CO. Dec. 30, 1936, No. 35745. Convention date, Jan. 4. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XVI] In a multi-colour printing-press, or other machine in which a series of operations in register are performed on a sheet, the machine is driven in such a way as to preserve accurate register of the sheets. One feature of the invention includes a gear wheel which is arranged in connection with a sheet transfer cylinder so that back lash and wear in the driving-members will not affect the sheetregistration, and the driving force imparted to the sheet transfer cylinder is derived in turn from the cylinder from which it receives the sheet, and the cylinder to which it transfers the sheet. As shown in Fig. 1, applied to a multi-colour offset printing-press, three printing- units each comprising a plate cylinder 13 offset cylinder 14 and impression cylinder 15 are driven independently from a main driving- shaft 19 by means of bevel gears 20 21, 22. The sheets are fed from a table 44 to the first impression cylinder 15 and from this cylinder the sheet is fed in register by gripper cylinders 26, 27, 28 to the next printing unit. The cylinder 26 is geared to the first cylinder 15, and the cylinder 28 to the second cylinder 15, and the cylinder 27 is driven alternately from gears 26<1>, 281 on the cylinders 26, 28. To effect this the shaft 29 of the cylinder 27 is fitted with two gears 30, 31, Figs. 6 and 7, of each of half the width of the gears 26<1>, 281. The gear wheels 30, 31 are each arranged eccentrically on the shaft 29, the wheel 30 being freely mounted and having a flexible connection with the wheel 31 which is fixed to the shaft. The flexible connection comprises a spring 41 arranged between a nut 38 secured to the wheel 30 and a pin 42 fixed to the wheel 31. The grippers 43 of the cylinder 27 are arranged adjacent to the portions of the gears 30, 31 which are farthest from the centre of the shaft 29, and as these portions of the gears engage the gears 26<1>, 28<1>, the drive is transmitted to the shaft 29 alternately from the cylinders 26, 28, and at the times when these cylinders are respectively feeding a sheet to or delivering it from the transfer cylinder 27. In intermediate positions of the gears 30, 31 the springs 41 cause relative movement between the teeth and so all slack is taken up and back lash is avoided.
