Abstract
493,809. Printing-machines. HOE & CO., Ltd., R. (Hoe & Co., Inc., R.) Dec. 20, 1937, No. 35232. [Class 100 (ii)] In a rotary printing-machine comprising a number of perfecting units A, B, Fig. 1, the printing and impression cylinders 10, 11 of each printing-couple D, E are driven by drive and synchronizing gears located at one side of the machine and directly intermeshed, components of the drive being constructed and arranged for movement to and from operative engagement in order to effect the reversal of operating direction of a selected printing-couple in a printing unit. The units can thus print impressions perfected in two colours, or may print in one colour on one side of a web and in three colours on the other. The units A, B are each driven in a similar manner by a vertical drive shaft 18, geared by bevel gears 19, 21 to a helical gear 22, which is shown in Fig. 3 as gearing direct with a wide helical gear 24 and also with a helical gear 30. The drive of the cylinders 10, 11 is synchronized owing to the engagement of the gear 24 with a helical gear 27 on the top cylinder 11, Fig. 3, and of the gear 30 with a helical gear 32 on the bottom cylinder 10. To reverse the lower cylinder 10, the gears 30, 32 are adjusted axially on splined shafts and gear 30 is brought into engagement with a normally idle wheel 42. A helical gear 44 secured to the sleeve on which the gear 42 is mounted is brought into engagement with the driving helical gear 22. The cylinders 10, 11 of unit D are thus reversed.
