Abstract
Monothiotetraphosphate, for use in softening water, may be prepared by heating a mixture of a metaphosphate and a sulphide of a metal; trithiotetraphosphate by heating a mixture of phosphorus pentoxide and a sulphide of a metal. Other thiotetraphosphates suitable for the purpose may be made by fusing tetraphosphates of alkali metals or ammonium with stoichiometric amounts of sulphur or phosphorus pentasulphide. Specification 476,455 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to U.S.A. Specifications 2,025,503 and 2,033,913.ALSO:Water is softened by the addition of an alkaline metal thiotetraphosphate or other soluble thiotetraphosphate. The treatment may take place in the presence of a soluble soap. Monothiotetraphosphate may be prepared by heating a mixture of a metaphosphate and a sulphide of a metal and trithiotetraphosphate by heating a mixture of phosphorus pentoxide and a sulphide of a metal. Other thiotetraphosphates suitable for the purpose may be made by fusing tetraphosphates of alkali metals or ammonium with stoichiometric amounts of sulphur or phosphorus pentasulphide. British Specification 476,455, [Group III], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to U.S.A. Specifications 2,025,503 and 2,033,913.
