Abstract
487,960. Universal joints. GUY & MURTON, Inc. Jan. 30, 1937, No. 2804. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] Two or more initially compressed, axially arranged rubber bushings 24 are mounted in flanged pockets in a carrier 22, secured to one shaft-member 21, and are internally engaged by studs 28, projecting axially from the other shaft-member 27. At least part of the bushings projects inwardly past the produced outer longitudinal surface 21 of the shaft carrying them. The bushings comprise rubber sleeves 24, bonded to an inner core 26 and an outer sleeve 25, both of flexible material and preferably consisting of several layers. As shown, the outer sleeve is retained in the carrier 22 by a shoulder 22b and by the flanged shaft-member 21 to which the carrier is bolted at 23, whilst the inner core is retained against a shoulder on the stud 28 by the head of a bolt 30, which secures the stud to the shaft-member 27. In a modification the carrier is integral with its shaft member and the studs have integral threaded ends, the outer sleeves and inner cores being retained by spring rings. In a further modification the carrier is divided along a median plane and has retaining shoulders at each end of the core. The carrier halves are bolted together and to their shaft-member, or, in the case of sheet-metal halves, are riveted together and are then bolted to their shaft-member as an assembly.
