Abstract

<PICT:0487934/IV/1> Wound packages of fibrous textile material in condition prior to spinning, such as a textile roving, are coloured, to give a shade effect in the fabric in which they are subsequently employed, by softening the bulk of the package as wound to equalize its penetrability by a liquid under pressure, applying, by a pattern stencil, pressure to compress and consolidate and define as to their edges those parts of the package which come under the solid parts of the stencil when the package is mounted on a foraminous holder, and passing colouring liquid through the stencil, the uncompressed parts of the package and the holder by differential pressure. The softening of the bulk of the package may be effected by first winding the package in the roving frame upon a tubular holder over which is placed a permeable sleeve, and removing the roving and sleeve to allow inward expansion of the mass. A perforated metal tube 6 is then fitted in the narrowed central bore and this may be mounted on a hollow mandrel 1 closed at one end and having a passage 3 through one side. The mandrel may, if desired, be patterned to correspond to a stencil 4 which is mechanically pressed, as by a piston in a cylinder under compressed air, upon the roving x. A colour container 5 is associated with the stencil 4, and liquid is drawn therefrom through to the mandrel 1. Specifications 294,504, [Class 15 (i)], and 482,817 are referred to.
