Abstract

Filaments of cellulose acetate or other artificial materials are soaked in liquids containing bodies of a hygroscopic character and are cut into staple lengths while still wet. The small content of hygroscopic material left on the fibres is stated to overcome difficulties in spinning due to electrification, and slipping of the fibres over each other. Examples of hygroscopic bodies are ammonium citrate; magnesium chlorides and other chlorides such as those of calcium, zinc, iron, and strontium; the nitrates of magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, cobalt, and nickel; the acetates and formates of ammonium, sodium, and potassium; sodium and potassium phosphates; amines and amides and their salts, e.g. acetamide and methylamine hydrochloride; quaternary ammonium compounds and their salts. As an example, hanks are placed in a 0,1 to 0,75 per cent solution of magnesium chloride and drained until they contain about their own weight in liquid, in which condition they are cut. The fibres may be subjected to a drying process, if desired, preceded by a preliminary centrifuging operation. In addition to the hygroscopic bodies, there may also be applied to the filaments roughening agents such as silica, barytes, lithopone, kieselguhr, or the soluble salts of Specification 372,797, and also lubricants, e.g. olive oil. The hygroscopic bodies and other applied substances may be removed immediately after spinning, or by means of the usual scouring operation to which the yarns are subjected after being made into fabrics. The yarn, e.g. cellulose acetate yarn, may be mixed with other yarn, for example, of viscose, silk, cotton, or wool. Specification 387,004 also is referred to.
