Abstract

In the distillation of tar by circulating therethrough and through a series of air condensers, an oxygen-free gas supersaturated with the tar vapours as described in the parent Specification, the supersaturation is controlled by injecting the desired quantity of condensate, comprising constituents of the tar under treatment, into the circulating gas or into the tar still. A pair of stills S1 and S2 used alternately are connected by a vapour conduit A to a series of condensers 1-6 which may comprise vessels, Fig. 3, filled with contact mass C supported on a grid G and provided with pipes O1, O2 through which condensate is withdrawn, the upper pipe O1 being used when the vapours are bubbled through the condensate. The circulating medium is injected into the still S, Fig. 2, through a pipe X into which the condensate collected from one or more of the condensers in a tank R is atomized by a pump P through a nozzle N. <PICT:0487306/III/1> <PICT:0487306/III/2> <PICT:0487306/III/3>
