Abstract

<PICT:0681737/III/1> In the continuous distillation of tar, especially coal tar, using a heater, flash-eyaporator and fractionating-column connected in series, a liquid side-stream is withdrawn from the column and recirculated, together with fresh tar, to the heater, flash-evaporator and column. The process obviates the decomposition of components of high molecular weight, in tars having a high content of pitch. Water-free tar is passed through conduit 1 into coil 3 wherein it is heated under pressure. The heated tar is then introduced into evaporation-chamber 5 which is maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure. The vapours, evolved in chamber 5, pass into tray-column 6, while the residue is withdrawn through line 7. A fraction rich in naphthalene is withdrawn from the column through line 9. A washing oil fraction containing a minor amount of naphthalene, is withdrawn from the column through line 13, and is returned to the tar feed-tank through conduit 14. The discharge from the base of the column, taken-off through line 10, is free from naphthalene; this discharge may be added to the residue withdrawn through line 7. The process may be carried out using a series of flash-evaporation stages each of which is associated with a column.
