Abstract

<PICT:0385866/III/1> In distilling liquids, e.g. oils, fatty acids, &c. under high vacuum by the injection into the liquid of substances, e.g. steam, which are condensable by cooling with water or air, the latter are injected as propellants into the liquid by means of an upcast pipe of the known gas lift type. Mineral oil boiling above 300 DEG C. in a still 1 is evaporated by injecting, from a pipe 4 into an upcast pipe 3, an oil fraction vaporizing at 200 DEG C. The vaporized light oil carries the heavy oil with it against a baffle 5 and the vapours formed pass off through an outlet 11, the heavy vapours being condensed from the light vapours in a series of condensers. In a modification, the upcast pipe 3 extends into a separate vessel placed above the still. Chemical reactions may be carried out simultaneously with the distillation by the introduction of materials, such as hydrogen peroxide, formaldehyde, &c., with the injected liquid.
