Abstract

487,126. Vehicle wheels. GOTTSCHALK, R. Nov. 10, 1937, No. 30844. [Class 144 (i)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a free-wheel and backpedalling brake hub, the hub shell is made of light metal (e.g. an aluminium or magnesium alloy), with one or more steel liners adapted to withstand the stresses and friction caused by the action of the brake and clutch. The light-metal shell may be applied to the liner by casting ; or the liner may be forced into the heated lightmetal shell, or may be secured to the shell by means of screw threads. In the form shown in the Figure, two steel liners 3, 4 are screwed into the ends of a light-metal shell 1, the liner 3 being provided with a ball-race 5 and a sleeve 6 forming the frictional surface for the brake while the liner 4 is provided with a ball-race 9 and a conical clutch surface 11. In a modification, the liner 4 screws into the end of the liner 3. The interengaging surfaces of the shell 1 and liners may be ribbed, corrugated, &c. to prevent relative rotation. Each end of the shell 1 may be bent inwards to engage the end of the liner, or a ring or cap may be screwed into each end of the shell. The liners may be formed of drawn sheet steel, and the sleeve 6 may be slit longitudinally to increase its resilience.
