Abstract

485,760. Overhead conductors for electric vehicles. STEVENS A. H. (Holden, Inc., R. R.) Nov. 24, 1936, No. 32172. [Class 104 (iii)] A double-conductor trolly system, comprises main conductors 15, 15<1>, branch conductors b, b<1>, m, m<1> and a pair of switches D, D<1> for guiding the collectors from the mains on to either of the branches, said switches being normally in a neutral position with respect to the branches and provided with means for guiding them into alignment with the mains and either of the branches, means for controlling said guide means, and means interconnecting the two guide means of the two switches to cause them to be similarly actuated. As the car approaches the switches, one collector lifts a shoe 102 pivoted to two bell-cranks 103, which carry a rod 107 connected at the forward end to a bell-crank 117. The forward movement of the rod 107 rocks the lever 117 which engages a pin 121 carried by a rotatable disc 122 and turns the latter so that a radial slot 125 therein lies parallel to one slant edge of a fixed adjacent plate 124, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7, the normal position being in full lines. A similar disc associated with the other switch D<1> is connected to 122 by a rod 127<1> so that both discs assume the same position. If the car is running straight through on to lines m, m<1>, the two collectors are in the same plane transverse to the lines 15, 15<1> and engage the two switches D, D<1> which are hung from bell-cranks 130, 131 and carry arms 128 provided with pins 126 passing across the edges of the plate 124 into the slots 125 of discs 122. The lift of the switches causes the pin 126 to move up the slots 125 towards the right as seen in Fig. 7, thus sliding the switches laterally along their pivot pins 135 into alignment with the through lines m, m<1>. If the car is turning a corner, one collector is ahead of the other, so that while one is lifting the shoe 102, the other engages the switch D<1>. The lifting of 102 turns the slots 125 into the dotted position of Fig. 7, while the lifting of D<1> moves the pin 126 up the slot 125 towards the left as seen in Fig. 7 and slides the switch D<1> into alignment with the branch b<1>. The other collector then engages the switch D and in the same way moves it into line with the branch b.
