Abstract

485,246. Artificial legs. SOKAL, S. (Instituto Ortopedico Rizzoli) June 9, 1937, No. 16044. [Class 81 (ii)] Relates to an hydraulic device for locking the articulation of the knee in the flexing direction. A cylinder 1 containing oil is hing- ed to the " shin " at 2<1> near the angle, and a piston 7, connected by a part 12 and hinge 13 to the lower part of the " thigh," sides therein on bending or straightening the knee, the oil passing through passages in the piston. A strap consisting of elastic and inelastic parts 22<1>, 22, attached to the wearer's belt 23 and running over a guide 19 on the part 12, is connected to a spindle 9 carrying a valve 25 pressed towards open position by a spring 33. When the wearer leans forward, either deliberately, or instinctively in regaining balance lost by stepping on the bended knee, tension on strap 22<1> closes valve 25 to lock the piston, allowing the whole weight to be supported. The knee may however be straightened, with valve 25 still closed by the tension on strap 22, piston 7 then moving upwards and oil passing through a flap valve 30 carried on valve 25, which valve 30 normally covers ports in valve 25.
