Abstract
484,617. Sluice valves. ATELIERS NEYRET-BEYLIER & PICCARD-PICTET. Jan. 29, 1937, No. 2734. Convention date, Sept. 17, 1936. Addition to 472,271. [Class 68 (ii)] In an automatic sluice as described in the parent Specification having an obturator 1, Fig. 1, in the form of a cylindrical sector connected through a platform 2 to an axis of rotation O at the centre of the cylinder, a chamber 20 open to the atmosphere is provided on the platform 2 and is supplied with liquid at up-stream pressure through an orifice 25 in the platform 2, the turning force produced by the up-stream pressure on the underside of the platform being balanced by that due to the weight of the sluice and of the liquid in chamber 20. The chamber 20 has a weir 24 at the side adjacent to the axis O so that the liquid in this chamber is maintained at constant level. The platform 2 is curved to compensate for the effect of the velocity of the stream. Walls 21 and 22, Fig. 2, form lateral cheeks and obviate the necessity of locating the sluice between fixed walls. Lateral openings may be provided as indicated in broken lines at 27 and a discharge orifice 26 may be provided. In an alternative arrangement the obturator 1, Fig. 3, is disposed on the upstream side of the axis of rotation O, a large chamber 27 being located adjacent the obturator 1 and supplied with liquid at upstream pressure through orifice 31, the chamber 27 being connected through pipes 30 to a smaller chamber 28 located adjacent the axis O and provided with a weir 32 which maintains a constant liquid level in the chambers 27, 28. The bottom 2 of the chamber 27 is subjected to upstream pressure which produces a turning force balanced by that due to the weight of the sluice and of the liquid in the chambers 27, 28. The capacity of chamber 27 may be varied by the introduction of a member 33 and a counter-weight 34 may be used partially to compensate for the weight of the sluice.
