Abstract

483,606. Airships. ALLEN, A. W. April 21, 1937, No. 1142]. Convention date, April 21, 1936. [Class 4] An airship framework comprises a plurality of units 7 in axial alignment and composed of end frame portions 8 and centre portions 9 connected by aligned longitudinal members 19. The units are connected together by springs arranged between the ends of the members 19 in order to absorb shocks. The members 19 thus form a series of articulated elements extending from end to end of the airship. Each frame portion 8 comprises girders 10, Fig. 2, connected by caps 11, also members 13 notched at the ends and fitting on and secured to certain of the caps 11 and connected to the other caps 11 by struts 14. Members 15 are secured to members 13 and wires 16 having springs located intermediately of their ends extend radially from the members 15 to a central ring 17. The frames 9 are similarly constructed but the caps 11 are omitted and the girders 10 are connected directly together and the wires 16 are omitted. The longitudinal members 19 are of triangular section and have the ends inserted in the caps 11 which are triangular in shape. The springs are fixed to the exterior of the cap members 11 of each unit by welding. The caps are internally braced by semicircular members.
