Abstract
258,918. Strauss, J. B. June 4, 1925. Airships; aerostats.-The aerostat framework of a rigid airship comprises two flat side frames united by top and .bottom cross members, the interior space being divided by diagonal bracing members into sections each adapted to contain a gas cell. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the side frames 1, .2 are formed of longitudinal girders 9 and upright girders 6 braced by diagonal members 7, and are joined by horizontal members 3 provided with enlarged connecting ends. The diagonal bracing members 8 divide the interior into open sections. The top and bottom of the framework are connected by secondary frames 10 connected to the side frames 1, 2 and the horizontal members 3 and joined by longitudinal girders 11. Coffin-shaped gas cells fill the 'space between adjacent secondary frames 10 as well as the space between adjacent diagonal braces 8. According to a modifled construction, the main framework formed by the flat sides 2<b>, Fig. 5, and the horizontal members 3a, is of square cross-section, and secondary frames 10a are connected to all the sides to form a circular section. Square gas cells are located in the central portion of the framework and peripheral segmental gas cells occupy the spaces between the secondary frames 10a. All the girders comprising the framework are of triangular truss construction. Cars and cabins.-Cars 13a, Fig. 2, are suspended from supports 12a connected to the upright girders 6.
