Abstract
220,394. McKelvey, A. L. May 22, 1923. Fuselages; framework; planes, connecting to machine. -A fuselage comprising a plurality of converging longitudinal menbers spaced apart at intervals along their length by rigid vertical frames, has connected to it wing- supporting truss frames, which surround the fuselage and are strengthened by cross bracing struts. In the construction shown, the fuselage is formed of three triangularly-arranged longitudinal members 7, 8, 9, each consisting of two concentric tubes spaced apart and bound together by V-shaped ribs 11, Fig. 3. The longitudinals converge towards their ends and are rigidly fixed together thereat. Spaced at intervals along their length are vertical frames each comprising two bent angle strips 12 placed back-to-back, secured at their ends 13 to the lower longitudinals 8, 9, and bent over the upper longitudinal 7. Two inner bracing stays 14, form a V-shaped inner wall for the lower longitudinals 8, 9, and are carried upwards face-to-face to support the top longitudinal 7. The converging parts of the stays 14 are braced by yokes 15, 16, which are connected together at their contiguous faces and are connected to the stays 14 at their ends. Struts 17 arranged in rhomboid form extend between the strips 12 and the stays 14. The frames are tied together by diagonal bracing wires 18, Fig. 1, provided with turnbuckles 19. The cabin or hull 10 consists of a double-walled shell the upper edges of which are connected to the longitudinals 8, 9. The hull is also supported by curved brackets 20, the ends of which are connected to the inner wall of the shell and to the lower ends of the stays 14. The wings are mounted upon frames 5, Figs. 1 and 2, strengthened by cross-bracing rods 6 and connected to the fuselage by masts 21, which extend through the upper longitudinal 7 and are connected to the lower longitudinals by interlaced frames 22. Steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.- The rudder 23, Fig. 1, is supported on a shaft 24 mounted on the upper longitudinal 7.
