- This invention relates to improvements in ships and has for its object to provide a new and improved device of this description. Another object of the invention is to provide a ship frame capable of resisting shear and moments longitudinally. Another object of the invention is to provide a ship frame which will be strong enough to pre vent its collapse from structural weakness when being handled. This invention relates to improvements in ships and has for its object to provide a new and improved device of this description. Another object of the invention is to provide a ship frame capable of resisting shear and moments longitudinally. Another object of the invention is to provide a ship frame which will be strong enough to pre vent its collapse from structural weakness when being handled. Another object of the invention is to provide a frame particularly adapted for dirigible airships. The invention has other objects which are more particularly pointed out in the accompanying description.

Referring now to the drawings;
I have shown a ship having a frame provided with a series of inclined, transverse members 1 having a space within their peripheries, these members-being connected together at suitable points so as to form a peripheral truss. In the construction shown these transverse members are inclined alternately in opposite directions and the adj acent members are connected together as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. There are a series of longitudinal members 2 which are connected to the transverse members 1. I prefer to connect the longitudinal members to the transverse members at the points where the transverse members are connected together as, for example, at the points 3 and i. This is more clearly shown in the diagrammatic, perspective view of Fig. 2. Any suitable means may be used for connecting these members together. I have shown in Fig. 3 an enlarged .view illustrating one form. In this View the transverse members 1 and the longitudinal member 2 are connected together by the connecting piece 5 which is connected to both of them. It will be noted that in this construction the memhere 1 and 2 are laced or trussed members,

consisting of separated members connected together by diagonals to form a truss or girder construction. I may also provide circumferential members 6. N hen the device is used in connection with a dirigible airship, the buoyancy may be secured in any desired way .s, for example, by providing gas cells 7. For such a construction the transverse members 1 are of the proper shape to permit these cells to occupy the space about which they extend. At'the bottom of the device I provide suitable bracing members 8, 9 and 10 as clearly shown in Fig.
i. The transverse and longitudinal members when connected together as herein shown take bending and shear as a truss. This gives the frame great strength longitudinally so that it can be handled, thereby permitting not only the safe handling but preventing the collapse of the structure from weakness when it is used in connection with a dirigible airship. A suitable inclosing shell is provided which is held in place by the longitudinal and transverse members. The transverse members a when extending entirely around the structure as in the case of a dirigible are non-circular as they are elongated or elliptical in shape. This strncture not only gives great rigidity longitudinally of the structure, regardless of its length, but so transmits and takes care of the moments and stresses as to provide a dirigible frame which meets the require-- ments presented, both of strength and safety.
I have described in detail a particular construction embodying the invention but it is of course evident that the parts may be varied in many particulars without departing from the spirit of the invention as embodied in the claims hereto appended and I, therefore, do not limit myself to the par ticular construction shown.
I claim:
1. A ship comprising a frame having a series of inclined, transverse members having a space within their peripheries, said inclined members arranged in pairs, the members of each pair crossing each other near the middle, so that portions of one project beyond portions of the other said members connected together at the crossing points to form a peripheral truss and longitudinal members connected to the peripheries of said transverse members.
2. A ship comprising a frame having a Series of inclined, transverse members haw ing a space Within their peripheriesysaid inclined members arranged in pairs, the members of each pair crossing each other-near the middle, so that portions of one project beyond portions of the other, said members connected together at the crossing points to torma peripheral truss and longitudinal members connected to the peripheries ot' said transverse members and an enclosing shell secured to said transverse and said longitudinal members to form an inclosed soace.

6. Aship comprising a frame having inclosing members extending across the breadth of the ship, said members arranged .in pairs and inclined alternately with relation tothe axis of said ship, the members of each pair crossmgeach other near their middle and being connected together at their crossing points, longitudinal members extending along said transverse members and connected theretoat-the points Where the transverse members are cennected-together,' whereby said members may take bending and shear as a'truss and-aninclosingi-shell held in place bysaid members.
7. A ship comprising a frame having a series of circular transverse members and a series of non-circular transverse members,
the non-circular membersarranged in pairsand being inclined ivith relation to each other and with the axis of said Fship, the non-circular members of-each paircross-i ing each other near their middle and bein connected together attheir crossing points, longitudinal members connected with said non-circular members at the points vvhere they are connected together: whereby. the transverse and longitudinal members act as a truss to resist all the. forcescoming on the ship.
8.
