[Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXVI] In an internal-combustion engine, a pump 21, Fig. 1, draws from a sump 18, into which used lubricating oil drains, and delivers through a pipe 22, a pressure-responsive valve 23, and a cooler 26 into a chamber 10 from which the lubricating pump 8 draws. The cooler 26 is provided with a byepass 76 controlled by a manually-operated valve 25, the pipe having a restriction 77 such as to ensure that the resistance to flow through the pipe 76 approximates to that through the cooler. Alternatively, a thermally-actuated valve may be provided to regulate the flow through the cooler and byepass so as to maintain a constant temperature of the oil. Thus, as shown in Fig. 2, a double-valve 86, 87 is connected to a rod 80 arranged in a casing, the rod having a greater coefficient of expansion than the casing. Springs 85, 88, arranged as shown, allow further expansion or contraction of the rod 80 after the valve 86 or 87 is fully closed.
