Abstract
482,951. Mercury switches. SEDGFIELD, H. B. Oct. 6, 1936, No. 27146. [Class 38 (v)] A mercury switch comprises a metal member 3 having a bore 3<1> communicating with a metal end cap 5 clamped by a nut 7 and insulated from member 3 by insulating washers 6, 8. The member 3 is connected by screws 12 to an angle bracket 13 which can be adjustably mounted on a vehicle so that the bore 3<1> is at an angle to the horizontal and a body of mercury 2 remains out of contact with a body of mercury 11 in cap 5. Acceleration of the vehicle on which the switch is mounted causes the mercury 2 to move along the bore 3<1> and unite with mercury 11 to complete a circuit between terminals 9, 10. In a modification, the mercury is confined in a bore in a body of insulating material and moves to bridge a pair of wells of mercury into which dip electrodes.
