Abstract
Cellulose ethers of a low degree of etherification which are insoluble in water but soluble in aqueous alkali, are prepared by a process involving the steps of continuously impregnating with a liquid etherifying agent a cellulose pulp sheet which has been previously treated with caustic alkali, continuously subjecting the impregnated sheet to pressure to remove excess of etherifying agent, and allowing the impregnated sheet to undergo reaction. As a modification the cellulose pulp sheet may be impregnated with the etherifying agent and caustic alkali simultaneously. The impregnation of the sheet with etherifying agent may be carried out by passing the sheet through a bath or spray of such agent and then through squeezing rollers; or by supplying the agent to the squeezing rollers, for example, by spraying the liquid on to one roller or by arranging that this shall dip into a trough, the roller being if necessary, provided with a covering of absorbent material or with an engraved surface. Aqueous solutions of etherifying agents are conveniently employed, and to them may be added wetting agents; similar additions may be made to the caustic alkali used in the preliminary step. This preliminary treatment with alkali to produce alkali cellulose may also be conducted as a continuous operation. The further reaction necessary to the etherification of the impregnated sheet may comprise standing at room temperature or at temperatures as high as 150 DEG C. or as low as 0 DEG C. In examples, wood-pulp sheets are treated in the above described manner with solutions of sodium methyl sulphate, sodium chloracetate, dimethyl sulphate, diethyl sulphate, ethylene chlorhydrin, and glyceryl monochlorhydrin, the caustic alkali being contained in the solution of the etherifying agent or the cellulose sheets being first converted into alkali cellulose. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the production of cellulose ethers in general; and it includes examples of the use of propylene oxide as the etherification reagent to give a product soluble in water, and of benzyl chloride to give a product insoluble in all solvents and somewhat water repellent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
