Abstract

Solvents are removed from cellulosic plastics by an osmotic process consisting in immersing the plastics in a non-solvent bath which has an osmotic pressure at least as great as that within the plastic, and gradually reducing the osmotic pressure. In an example the treating bath comprises an aqueous solution of alcohol containing approximately 20 per cent by volume of alcohol. Celluloid sheets cut from a block are immersed in the bath and the alcohol is gradually replaced with water. For carrying out the process on a large scale, a series of tanks in which the percentage of alcohol gradually decreases may be used, the celluloid being moved from tank to tank. In another arrangement the tanks are in cascade overflowing from one to the next, the first of the series being fed with water. Periodically the first tank of the series is recharged with celluloid and alcohol solution and water is fed into the next tank, the recharged tank becoming the last of the series. Instead of cutting sheets from a block, the cellulosic plastic may be extruded in sheet form directly into the treating bath. Other baths specified are aqueous solutions of common salt and of sugar. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of the osmotic process to other plastics such as vulcanized fibre. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Solvents are removed from cellulosic plastics by an osmotic process consisting in immersing the plastics in a non-solvent bath which has an osmotic pressure at least as great as that within the plastic, and gradually reducing the osmotic pressure.
