Abstract

482,633. Photographic sensitive materials. KODAK, Ltd. Feb. 15, 1937, No. 4494. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (ii)] Alteration in acidity or hydrogen ion concentration of photographic emulsion layers due to material leaching from a contiguous or adjacent layer into the emulsion is prevented by the provision between the layer and the emulsion of a layer of inert hydrophilic colloid buffered at substantially the same hydrogen ion concentration as the emulsion by the addition thereto of an inert soluble weak acid or base with or without a salt thereof. The buffered layer may be placed between the emulsion and a cellulose nitrate support ; between the emulsion and a gelatine substratum particularly when a cellulose acetate or ester support is used ; on the back of the support, a substratum being provided between the emulsion and the support ; or may comprise the adhesive layer in a stripping film. A stripping film comprises a temporary paper support having a gelatine layer on one side and a baryta coating on the other, on which baryta coating is the buffered adhesive layer, the permanent cellulose nitrate support, and the emulsion. The adhesive layer may consist of glue or glue and dextrin, and may contain glycerine. A layer of dextrin may be coated directly on the paper and the buffered adhesive layer of glue or glue and dextrin applied thereto. A gelatine layer may be applied between the permanent support and the emulsion or between the support and the adhesive layer. In a film having emulsion layers on both sides, the support carries buffered gelatine layers, and if desired additional substrata, and finally emulsion layers on both sides. Abrasion preventing or anti-static layers may be coated over the emulsion. Buffered backing layers may contain dye to enable them to be used as anti-halation layers. The substrata may be of casein, agar-agar, cellulose derivatives or resins.
