Abstract

492,257. Photographic emulsions. KODAK, Ltd. Feb. 15, 1937, No. 21733/38. Convention date, June 9, 1936. Divided out of 492,162. [Class 9S (ii)] Alteration in acidity or hydrogen ion concentration of photographic gelatine emulsion layers is prevented by buffering the emulsion in the range pH5 to pH10 by adding to the wet emulsion before coating 0À15 to 1À0 per cent by weight on the wet emulsion of a substantially colourless organic amino compound or compounds, the compound being an arylamine or aralkylamine containing one aromatic nucleus, or an aliphatic amino-carboxylic acid, or an aliphatic amino-sulphonic acid, or an amidine, the compound being inert with respect to silver halides and having a pKa value between 5À5 and 9À5 or a pKb value between 4À5 and 8À5, and having sufficient water-solubility to avoid crystallization in air-dry gelatine. A suitable amount of the compound is 0'15 per cent by weight on the wet emulsion. Compounds referred to are alpha-amino-n-butyric acid, taurine, ethylene diamine, dimethylbenzylamine and guanidine. The use of hydroxylamine hydrochloride is also referred to. Positive, negative, X-ray, and print-out emulsions may be treated, and the silver halides used in the emulsions may be silver chloride, bromide or iodide. Specification 492,162 is referred to.
