Abstract

492,162. Photographic emulsions. KODAK, Ltd. Feb. 15, 1937, No. 4496. Convention date, June 9, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (ii)] Alteration in acidity or hydrogen on concentration of photographic gelatine emulsion layers is prevented by buffering the emulsion in the range pH5 to pH10 by adding to the wet emulsion before coating 0À05 to 1À0 per cent by weight on the wet emulsion of a substantially colourless organic compound or compounds having a carboxylic acid group, or a sulphonic acid group, or a phenolic group, or an enolic keto group, the compound being inert with respect to silver halides and having a pKa value between 5À5 and 9À5, and sufficient water solubility to avoid crystallization in air-dry gelatine. A suitable amount of the compound is 0À15 per cent by weight on the wet emulsion. Compounds referred to are substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic polybasic carboxylic acids, particularly malic, malonic, isopropylmalonic, diethylmalonic, dipropylmalonic, maleic, mucic, tricarballylic, pyromellitic, dcamphoric and diethylsuccinic acids, aliphatic ketones such as acetylacetone and acetonylacetone, a-amino-n-butyric acid, taurine, 2 : 4- dichlorophenol, trichlorophenol, iodosobenzoic acid, p - hydroxybenzaldehyde, phloroglucinol, resorcinol, alpha-naphthol, and guaiacol. The use of p-nitrophenol, and hydroxylamine hydrochloride also is referred to. Positive, negative, X-ray. and print-out emulsions may be treated, and the silver halides used in the emulsions may be silver chloride, bromide. or iodide. Specification 492,257 is referred to.
