Abstract

470,565. Photographic films. KODAK, Ltd. Jan. 13, 1936, No. 1131. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1935. [Class 98 (ii)] A photographic film comprises an organic cellulose derivative support and a photographic gelatine emulsion adherent to a gelatine substratum, to which good adherence of the emulsion and high flexibility are imparted by the application to the support of a very thin substratum which has as a major constituent a hydrophobic synthetic resin capable of adhering to the support and compatible with the emulsion. The synthetic resin substratum may be coated with a cellulose derivative substratum to which the gelatine substratum adheres. As shown, on a support 1 of a single or mixed organic cellulose derivative is deposited a very thin synthetic resin substratum 2. The substratum 3 is of cellulose acetate or nitrate, the substratum 4 is of gelatine and the layer 5 is a photographic gelatine emulsion. The support 1 may be of cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate or acetate propionate. Suitable synthetic resins are polyvinyl acetate, hydrolyzed or partially hydrolyzed vinyl resins, the condensation products of partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate with formaldehyde or acetaldehyde, or aromatic sulphonamides with formaldehyde, of polyhydric alcohols with polybasic acids, ureaformaldehyde resins and the modified phenolformaldehyde resins. The resin and cellulose derivative substrata may be about 0À00008 inch thick. The substrata may be applied by immersion or by a roller. The support may have the substrata on one or both sides, or may have an anti-curling gelatine layer on one side.
