Abstract

482,538. Ironing - presses. UNITED STATES HOFFMAN MACHINERY CORPORATION. Jan. 20, 1937, No. 1736. Convention date, April 17, 1936. [Class 138 (ii)] In an ironing-press which is closed by the double toggle system 21, 23 ; 31, 32 operated by the pedal P, locking means associated with the primary toggle are provided for holding the press closed, and such means may be released either by hand or by foot. The pivot 24 connecting the links 21, 23 of the primary toggle is extended laterally and is provided with a roller 27 which, when the press is open, abuts against the outer face of a curved tail piece 52, formed on a latch member 49 pivoted to the stationary frame of the press at 50, the tail piece in this position being concentric with the pivot 22 of the link 21. The latch member is provided with an arm 53 connected by the link-and-lever system 61-64 to a handle 65 on the press head and biassed by a spring 66 so that the latch follows the roller 27 as the press closes. Just before the toggles reach straight-line position a shoulder 51 on the latch passes under the roller 27 and holds the toggles until it is released by depressing the handle 65 whereupon the latch is swung clockwise and the press opens under the action of the usual springs 39. A rod 54 passes freely through an aperture in the arm 53 and is connected to a pedal 56 which is biassed upwardly by a spring 58. On depressing the pedal, an adjustable nut 55 on the rod engages beneath the arm 53 and rocks the latch to release the toggles thereby providing an alternative release to that provided by the handle 65. The closing movement of the press is cushioned by a buffer 48 adjustably carried by an arm 44 projecting from one of the links 23 of the primary toggle engaging a pad 45 secured to one of the links 31 of the secondary toggle.
