Abstract

482,363. Batteries. MAcCALLUM, F., and REDFERN, A. H. June 24, 1936, No. 35651/35. [Class 53] A number of flat cells comprising bipolar plates of zinc and carbon are held together during assembly by tubes 10 of rubber or other extensible material containing string, cord or other inextensible material 11 the ends of which project from the tubes 10 and are tied together as shown at 12. The cells while thus bound tightly together are covered with an elastic coating 16 which may comprise alternate layers of varnish and rubber applied in solution which may be vulcanized by immersion of the complete assembly in a sulphur solution. The vulcanizing process may be arrested by dipping the battery in caustic soda or ammonia. Alternatively vulcanization may be effected by employing layers of self-vulcanizing rubber compound. When the vulcanizing process has been completed the string 11 is cut, the tubes 10 being held in position by the covering 16 and being sufficiently elastic to allow of expansion of the battery. Specifications 423,165 and 474,151 are referred to.
