Abstract

Monoazo dyes soluble in water are made by coupling in an alkaline medium with 2 : 8 : 6-acid or 2-amino-8-naphthol-3 : 6-disulphonic acid or an N-alkyl or N-aryl derivative thereof, a diazo compound of the general formula <FORM:0481570/IV/1> wherein X = halogen or SO3H, Y = a diazo group and R may contain further substituents, the components being selected so that the finished dyestuff contains at least two sulphonic acid groups. They dye leather in brown shades. In examples, the following dyes are described: (1) and (4) 2-chlor- or 2-brom-1 : 4-diaminobenzene-6-sulphonic acid --> N-phenyl- or methyl-2 : 8 : 6-acid; (2) 1 : 4-diaminobenzene sulphonic acid --> 2 : 8 : 6-acid, chlor-1 : 4-diaminobenzene --> 2-amino-8-naphthol-3 : 6-disulphonic acid; (5) 2-methyl-1 : 4-diaminobenzene-6-sulphonic acid --> N-ethyl-2 : 8 : 6-acid; (6) 2-methoxy-1 : 4-diaminobenzene-6-sulphonic acid --> N-(41-methoxy-, methyl- or chloro-phenyl)-2 : 8 : 6-acid. Additional components specified in a table are: 2 : 6-dichloror dibrom-1 : 4-diaminobenzene, 1 : 4-diaminobenzene-2 : 6-disulphonic acid, 2-ethoxy - 1 : 4-diaminobenzene-6-sulphonic acid.
