481,486. Stays. HAWKINS, W. F. Sept. 11, 1937, No. 24831. [Class 65 (i)] A device for maintaining a door in predetermined positions comprises an arcuate track member 14 fixed to the frame and an arm 15 pivoted at one end to the member 14 at or near the centre of curvature of the latter, the arm carrying a spring-influenced friction device which is slidable longitudinally thereon and which has a roller 25 engaging one face of the member 14 and a friction pad engaging the opposite face. The friction device comprises a frame 24, sliding in the arm 15, which is hollow, the member 14 passing through the frame; the roller 25 is carried on the frame 24, and a spring is compressed between the opposite end of the frame and a friction pad engaging the inside face of the member 14. The outer face of the member 14 is formed with depressions so that .the compression of the spring is increased when the roller 25 rides out of any depression, thus increasing the frictional resistance to movement and creating a force tending to return the roller to the bottom of the depression. The arm 15 is slidably engaged with a bracket 22 on the door, but may be disengaged therefrom by raising its hinged end 21 ; alternatively the end of the arm may be telescopic and held in extended position by a set screw. One of the depressions in the member 14 is preferably arranged so that the door moves ajar when its fastening is released.
