Abstract

481,451. Heating liquids. HIGHFIELD, J. S., and HIGHFIELD, W. E. Sept. 19, 1936, No. 25546. [Class 64 (i)] An immersion unit heater for heating liquids by steam comprises metal plates or fins 1 assembled in pairs with a narrow gap 4 between the plates of each pair and a wider gap 5 between successive pairs so that steam can escape only into the narrow gaps, where it escapes and is cooled by the water in the wider gaps. Thin packing members 9 space the plates of each pair and thick spacing plates 10 are placed between each pair. All these components are clamped between end plates by bolts 13 and have holes which register to form a passage for steam admitted from a central pipe 14 or from end pipes. The fins may comprise annular discs surrounding a cruciform mandrel 16, successive pairs of fins being kept apart by cylindrical sleeves 17 fitted on the mandrel. One fin of each pair is ribbed to space them. An end flange 18 on the mandrel may be screwed into a wall 19 of the tank.
