[Class 88 (ii)] [Also in Group XIV] The fall 15 and a music desk 16 separate therefrom are arranged so that the music desk is automatically moved to its operative position as the fall is raised to uncover the keyboard, and restored to its inoperative position when the fall is lowered. The fall 15 has a rear extension 24 provided with a cam 33 adapted to contact with the end 28a of a lever 28 pivoted to the side member 10 of the casing at 29a and connected by a link 27 with the front part 16 of the top which is hinged at 26 and in the open position shown forms the desk. The front 22 of the fall with its lip 23 forms the ledge of the desk. The member 16 extends across the entire width of the piano, forming the front half of the top cover and the linkage 27, 28 is such that its weight tends to keep the fall 15 in its raised position. The cam 33 is in the form of a bent metal strip. A blade spring may act on the lever 28 to check the descent of the part 16 on closing the fall. The front rail 17 to which the part 16 is hinged is secured to the side walls of the casing by sliding latches 25 and the pivots for the fall comprise screws 18 engaging tapped holes in brackets 19 on the fall and entering recesses in bearing plates sunk into the keyboard cheeks 11. The pin 31 connecting the part 16 to the link 27 is readily removable. The linkage 27, 28 may be provided at one or both ends of the fall.
