[Class 88 (ii)] The fall of a pianoforte slides on runners being guided by a linkage connected to the casing. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, after turning up the concaved front ledge 17 about its hinge, the fall F may be pushed rearwardly along runners 20 secured to the ends of the casing, being guided to prevent jamming, by a pair of links 22, 25 at each end of the fall, connected by pivots 21, 28 to the fall and the casing respectively, and by a longitudinal bar 24 to each other. If the ledge 17 is made integral, the front edge of the fall must be lifted and held raised during the rearward movement, the board 16a being hinged to swing inwards when engaged. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the fall F is held in closed position on a block 20a at each end by the weight of a hinged flap 34 which overcomes the force of springs 31 acting between pins 33 on the casing and pins 32 on the arms 25. On lifting the front edge of the fall, the springs lift the rear edge (in turn lifting the flap 34) maintaining the fall substantially horizontal whilst it is moved rearwardly on to the elevated ramped runners 20b. In grand pianofortes, the linkages may be arranged below the level of the fall.
