Abstract

480,692. Aircraft catapults; stuffing-box substitutes. MITCHELL, C. C., and RICHARDS, A. Aug. 25, 1936, Nos. 23305/36 and 5660/37. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXVI] An aircraft catapult comprises a cylinder having an end cover provided with a gland, a piston, a smooth cylindrical cable passing through the gland and connected at one end to the piston and at the other end either directly or indirectly through the medium of one or more pulleys to a carriage on which the aircraft is mounted, means for introducing or creating a fluid pressure in the cylinder for firing the piston, and means whereby lubricant is supplied to the gland at a pressure greater than the pressure of the fluid in the cylinder. In one form, Fig. 1, a piston 5 is moved along a cylinder 1 by fluid pressure admitted at 4, a cable 6 secured to the piston passing through a gland 3 at the end of the cylinder, over a pulley 7 and being attached to a launching carriage 8 moving in a guide 9. Gland 3 is maintained fluid-tight by an oil seal. Pulley multiplying gear may be arranged between piston and carriage. In a double-acting arrangement, cables 6 are connected one on either side of piston 5 and pass through glands at the ends of the cylinder, and are either connected direct to the carriage 8 or, as shown, to pulleys 9a around which are passed cables 10 connected at one end to the carriage and at the other to a fixed anchorage. Means for braking the piston at the end of the stroke comprise a byepass passage 13, the inlet to which is uncovered by the piston to permit the driving fluid to pass in front of the piston to provide a cushioning medium, the driving pressure being relieved on further travel by the uncovering of a vent conduit 14. Valves 13b, 14b are provided to render the byepass and conduit inoperative when the direction of launching is reversed, a second byepass 13a and conduit 14a then being employed. In a modification, hydraulic damping may be used to brake the piston.. More than one cable 6 may be employed in conjunction with multiple glands.
