Abstract
480,555. Closing vacuum holes in containers by welding. POUILLARD, F. J. March 25, 1937, Nos. 8779 and 8780. Convention dates, March 26, 1936 and Jan. 6, 1937. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Vacuum holes or slots in metal receptacles are closed in vacuo after evacuation by electric resistance welding a metallic disc peripherally thereto. The receptacle may be provided with a cup 4 for centring purposes in which the vacuum hole 3 is made, and a flat disc 1 is inserted and welded by a positive electrode 6, which co-operates with a negative electrode 7 separated by insulation from electrode 6. The electrodes are contained in a vacuum bell. The negative electrode may be disposed below the positive electrode to serve also as a support for the receptacle. The disc may be provided with a centring nipple 1a to engage the hole 3, or both centring means may be used. The receptacles may be made of rustless steel, untinned iron, aluminium or aluminium alloys.
