479,779. Prepayment mechanism for collecting fixed charges &c. HUDSON, N., HORSTMANN GEAR CO., Ltd., and CLARK. R C. Sept. 2, 1936, No. 24036. [Class 27] A coin-freed time-controlled mechanism is connected to the change-speed gear of a primary mechanism, which may be coin-freed or not, so that, on insertion of a coin to start the time-controlled mechanism, the primary mechanism is set to operate at a particular speed and at the end of the operating period of the time-controlled mechanism, the primary mechanism is set to operate at another speed. In an application, wherein the primary mechanism is a prepayment gas meter, the coin-freed time-controlled device is constructed to function similarly to the valveactuating mechanism described in Specification 414,124. A pivoted plate 1, corresponding to the bell-crank 27, 28, 29 described in Specification 414,124, is moved in one direction by the clockwork and in the other by the insertion of a coin and operation of a knob 17. The plate 1 acts through a linkage 9, 10, 11 on a rockable plate 8 carrying the gear-changing wheels 5, 6, 7 of a two-speed gear G in the prepayment gas meter mechanism. At the end of a predetermined run of the time-controlled mechanism, the plate 8 is rooked-if another coin has not been inserted in the time-controlled mechanism-and the gear G changed so that the gas meter operates at a quicker rate to close its valve, i.e. to deliver less commodity per unit charge.
