Abstract

479,287. Cold rolling. CHRIST, H. July 30, 1936, No. 21148. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1935. [Class 83 (iv)] In cold rolling an endless metal strip between rolls 1, the strip is pulled through the mill by a tensioning drum 4 and braked by another drum 3, the frictional grip of the drums on the strip is increased by roller &c. chains 6 which are tightened by lovers 7 and adjustable weight S, so that a free loop of the strip can be developed extending down below the floor level and dipping into a cooling and washing and lubricating fluid. A shears may also be provided there. The two drums are arranged as close together as possible. The drums are driven by electric motors, one acting as a dynamo to generate assisting current for the other. A welder 5 may be provided to join the strip ends together. The strip may also be held to the drum surface by endless chain or laminated bands adj ustably pressed to the drums by mechanical or electromagnetic forces. The pressing chains &c. can either be swung clear of the drums or have an opening therein for the strip. The pass adjustment of the rolls may be controlled by a device which measures the thickness of the strip (no details). Means for measuring the tensile forces in the strip may also regulate both the adjustment of the rolls and the tensile forces.
