Abstract
620,873. Rolling. BURGESS BATTERY CO. Jan. 28, 1947, No. 2670. Convention date, March 15, 1946. [Class 83 (iv)] Working at specified temperatures.-In a method of reducing thin sheets of magnesium or magnesium base alloys, the material 10 is heated by the heater 14 to a temperature of from 500‹ to 600‹ F. for a time ending not more than half a second prior to reaching the rolls 15. The invention is particularly applicable to material of an initial thickness of 0.002 inches to 0.01 inches. The rolls 15 are themselves heated to a temperature of 200‹ to 300‹ F., and a heater 17 on the exit side of the rolls reheats the material to a temperature of 435‹ to 600‹ F. to permit annealing and the levelling of irregularities under tensioning by a driven reel 20. The time factor may vary but preferably the maximum time of heating for each portion of the strip, from entry into the heater 14 to exit from the heater 17, should not exceed 5 seconds, and each portion of the strip is at a temperature of 435‹ to 600‹ F. for not more than 3 seconds before making contact with the reducing rolls. In a modification continuous mills have heaters interposed between successive sets of rolls. Electric resistance or induction heating may be used.
