Abstract
Fats, fatty oils, and waxes of the ester type are refined by extracting with an amine free from hydroxy groups, in the presence of water. The proportion of water added is about 1 to 2 mols. of water per amine group. Fatty acids, mucins, colour, and odoriferous constituents are removed. Amines specified are, mono-, di-, or tri-amines such as ethylamine, isopropyl-amine, tertiary butylamine, diethyl carbylamine, neopentylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, ethylene diamine,, cadaverine, piperazine, diethylene triamine and aralkylamines such as benzylamine, phenylethylamine. Amines containing substituted halogen groups such as bromoethyl amine may be used. Palm, cotton seed, linseed, corn, olive, fish, soya bean oils, or Japan wax, spermaceti, carnauba wax may be treated. For example, cacao butter is agitated at 30--100 DEG C. with ethylene diamine, alkylamine, trimethylamine or cadaverine containing equimolecular amounts of water, or saturated with water. The mixture is then centrifuged or distilled with steam, and the recovered fat is washed and dried. The amine may be recovered from the extract by flash distillation.
