Abstract

Products suitable for dressing, sizing, finishing or softening textiles are made by emulsifying one or more fatty oils and/or fatty acids in water with the aid of vegetable phosphatides or lecithins. The slush obtained in extracting the oil from soya beans with benzine, purified in known manner with acetone or acetic ether may be used, but a purer extract is obtained when soya beans are lixiviated with a mixture of benzol and alcohol, for example 90 parts benzol and 10 parts of 96 per cent alcohol. After evaporation of the solvent, steam is passed in to separate out the phosphatides, which are removed, centrifuged to free them from entrained oil and dried under reduced pressure. The emulsion is made by adding to a molten mixture of the phosphatides maintained at, for example, 50 DEG C. to 60 DEG C., a small quantity of dilute alkali such as soda lye or soap and vigorously mixing with water. Turkey red oil or mineral oils may be added. Before use the emulsion may be further diluted with water. Vegetable lecithins obtained, for example, from peas, lupins, and cereals such as wheat and rye may be used in place of the phosphatides derived from soya beans.ALSO:Products for use in printing, dressing, sizing, finishing or softening textiles are made by emulsifying one or more fatty oils and/or fatty acids in water with the aid of vegetable phosphatides or lecithins.
