Abstract
478,538. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. Nov. 17, 1936, No. 31482. (Class 100 (i)] In an automatic sheet-feeding machine in which sheet-separating and forwarding mechanism, which may be of the kind described in Specification 427,041, act to raise the sheets from a pile and forward them to a delivery position, the sheets are controlled as they move forwards by means of smoothing devices which move forward with the sheets as they are being fed to delivery position. In Fig. 1 the smoothers are constructed as wires 19 which are connected to suckers 17 acting upon the rear of the pile, and the front ends of the wires are bent and reciprocate in hooks 15 suspended from a rail 13 arranged above a feed roll 11. The suckers 17 are suspended from a rail 16 which is moved to and from the pile and also is reciprocated in a longitudinal direction. An air blower 30 assists in separating the sheets, which may finally be advanced as an overlapping stream feed. In a modification, Fig. 2, a sheet 22 of celluloid, or the like, may replace the wires 19, and the sheets are slotted at 26 to permit of reciprocating relatively to feed rolls 25. In further modifications the smoothers may take the form of bands attached to a spring drum which winds up the bands as the suckers reciprocate towards the feed rollers 11, 25 ; or endless bands may be used passing over rollers carried by arms fixed to the rails 13, 16, the bands being driven continuously or intermittently.
