Abstract

472,109. Feeding sheets. EHRIG, H., and KEILHAUER, U. April 15, 1937, No. 10785. Addition to 455,258. [Class 100 (i)] The sheet - feeding device described in the parent Specification is modified in that the grippers of both sets are distributed over the whole width of the device. Various arrangements suitable for small, medium, and large sheets are described. For small sheets arranged in two adjacent piles, the grippers of the primary set are secured to a cantilever carrier rod attached to a lever of an actuating-means at one side of the feeder, and the secondary grippers are arranged in a similar manner but attached to a lever of an actuating-means on the opposite side of the feeder. For medium sheets arranged in two adjacent piles, the primary grippers are supported on two coaxially arranged cantilever carriers, and the secondary grippers on a centrally supported carrier. For large sheets arranged in two adjacent piles, each of the grippers of the primary set T, Fig. 2, and secondary set H has an actuating- mechanism of its own, and the sets are arranged so that a gripper of the primary set lies between a pair of grippers of the secondary set, except in the middle of the feeder where a pair of secondary grippers H<4>, H<5> are arranged side by side. The latter pair of grippers may have one common actuating-mechanism. The two sheet piles may be arranged on separate platforms which are gradually raised. A device for raising the rear portion of each sheet as it is in transit to the conveying-rollers may be provided, particularly where the sheets are to be fed in overlapping relationship. As shown in Fig. 7c, suction grippers 109 are mounted on one end of a double-armed lever 110, the lever being pivoted to a rocking-arm 12. On movement of the arm, the end 110<1> of the lever rides along a cam 11 under spring action, so that the grippers are lowered to pick up the rear end of a sheet as it passes between the rollers 34, 35. In another form, a perforated tube connected to a source of compressed air is arranged beneath the sheets. In a further form, a number of guide rods for the sheets are attached to a rocking-frame which carries the lower rollers 34. The primary grippers may be tilted about their rear edges by suctionoperated means as described in the parent Specification, or a mechanical means, as shown in Fig. 8, may be used. This comprises a cam and lever motion K, 220, rocking arm 212, and an adjustable connecting-rod 218 pivoted to a double-armed lever 21 for tilting the gripper T20.
